Southwest Western Australia
We’re going on a road trip… again! To kick off the month of April and our first uni study week off, my friends and I drove even further down under. We explored the secluded towns of Albany, Denmark, and Margaret River and saw tons of beautiful, mountainous beaches, winding backroads, and iconic pitstops. All the details of our six days of adventuring are below. I also added some spots I hit with four friends the month prior-to for a quick day trip we went on. Would love to hear what you incorporate into your travels in the comments, enjoy!
Beaches:
Castle Rock | Dunsborough
Elephant Rocks | Denmark
Gracetown | Margaret River
Green Pools | Denmark
Hamelin Bay | Margaret River
Arrive around 8:00am to see manta and sting rays swim toward the shore! It got busy around 9:00am when we went here.
Little | Albany
Middleton | Albany
Nanarup | Albany
Redgate | Margaret River
Surfer’s | Albany
Dining:
Bakery and Cafe | Margaret River
Indian Tandoori | Albany
Excursions:
Bluff Knoll | Albany
$17 fee to park at the car park
hike 3.2 km up and 3.2 km back down | 3-4 hours total
Not to be underestimated. This hike is very steep with far-reaching steps we almost had to lunge for. We got to the top in about two hours and came back down to the car park in under an hour. Nevertheless, it was stunning! I recommend going at sunset like we did or even sunrise (bring a light in either case, whether on your phone or via a device like a headlamp).
Busselton Jetty | Busselton
Book an underwater observatory tour (there are only six in the entire world!), snorkel day pass, or train ride along the jetty.
The longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere with a length of 1.841 kilometers, or 1.144 miles!
Lake Cave | Margaret River
1-hour tour | adults: $24 - kids (4-16): $12 - seniors: $22
A fairly simple cave, but with a beautiful start/finish of walking down heaps of steps to reach the cave’s entrance. Four of my friends and I toured this cave as part of our previous day trip down south.
Surfing Lessons | Margaret River
$60 for a single-day, two-hour lesson | includes a board and wetsuit
$35 to hire a surf board and wetsuit for 4 hours
This was my first time surfing, although I had boogieboarded and bodysurfed. I found it accommodated all levels of experience very well. We spent lots of time in the water and had plenty of opportunities to catch waves, which my friends and I all did :)
